Toulouse Métropole has chosen the RFID Discovery team to equip its waste collection network with 30,000 RFID tags, marking an important step in the city’s strategy to modernise and digitalise waste management.
Supporting the traceability of waste containers: The municipality launched a public tender to enhance the identification and traceability of its waste bins and collection points. RFID Discovery, part of Paragon ID, won the contract thanks to its recognised expertise in RFID (radio frequency identification) technology.
The project involves fitting more than 30,000 containers – including those used by businesses, voluntary drop-off points and healthcare facilities – with high-frequency (HF) RFID tags. These “trash tags” enable more accurate inventory management and make it easier to track and maintain containers across the territory.
Tools designed for efficient deployment

To simplify installation, the RFID Discovery team developed a dedicated tool to assist with the application and removal of tags, replacing the manual hammer previously used. The team worked closely with Toulouse Métropole, conducting onsite tests and delivering the complete solution within just a few weeks.
While the current phase focuses on tags, the city has also reviewed HF manual readers supplied by RFID Discovery as part of its evaluation of future operational enhancement.
A foundation for future innovation
The rapid delivery and successful rollout of the first 30,000 tags confirm the RFID Discovery team’s ability to deliver robust, scalable identification solutions for public services. This project lays the groundwork for future developments as Toulouse Métropole continues to optimise its waste management infrastructure.
